Minutes of Safety Meetings
September 6, 2005

Those present were: Jim Moore Chairman, Scott Garrett, Bob Donham Council member, Jess Starkey Mayor, Mark Manlove Solicitor Jack DeSalvo Police Chief , Clair Simpson Fire Chief and Kevin Knight Village Administrator.

Full time officer: Chief DeSalvo reported the following.

  1. Mark McComas submitted his written resignation to be effective on Oct. 14, 2005. The resignation was accepted by the committee and will be brought to council for vote.

  2. Due to financial condition of the General Fund the Safety Committee, the Finance Committee and the Mayor concluded that this full time officer position should not be filled at this time with another full time officer. We will have to wait for the results of the income tax levy in November. If the levy does not pass then the general fund will not have enough to provide for filling this full time position.

  3. A letter from Tom Schmidt of Schmidt of Schmidt of Macedonia who donated the K-9 (Gunner) in Oct. 2002. The letter concerned the conditions of the donation and what happens when the K-9 unit is no longer used or disbanded by the Police Dept.

  4. An update on the county Drug Task Force. Portage County Sheriff Kaley will be the director. The cost to join for each municipality will be $7,000.00. Currently there are seven (7) joining which are: Ravenna, Aurora, Kent, Streetsboro, Sheriff’s Dept. Brimfield Twp. and Windham Village. A total of $49,000.00 to start the Drug Task Force.

Fire Chief Simpson reported that his stolen radio was anonymously returned, that a dumpster will be put in the back of the Police Station garage to clean out the Fire Dept. items in the police Dept. garage and that the Fire Dept will apply for a grant for next year 2006 for a E-1 engine replacing the red pumper.
