Water Superintendent
Job Summary:
The Water Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of a municipality’s water treatment and distribution systems. This role ensures the delivery of safe, reliable, and high-quality water to the community while managing staff, budgets, and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operations & Maintenance
- Supervise daily operations of water treatment plants and distribution systems.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal water quality standards.
- Oversee water quality testing and monitoring programs.
- Implement preventative maintenance schedules and emergency response plans.
- Manage repair and replacement of aging infrastructure.
- Personnel Management
- Hire, train, and evaluate water department staff.
- Provide work instructions and ensure safe working conditions.
- Maintain after-hours coverage and emergency response readiness.
- Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure adherence to EPA, BWC and OSHA regulations.
- Prepare and submit mandated reports, loan reporting and documentation as required.
- Stay updated on current and future regulatory changes.
- Budgeting & Administration
- Develop and manage departmental budgets.
- Track expenditures, inventory, and payroll.
- Prepare reports and presentations for city officials and the public.
- Community & Interdepartmental Relations
- Respond to citizen complaints professionally.
- Workorder completeness reporting.
- Coordinate with other city departments and external agencies.
- Represent the department at city council meetings and public events.
Qualifications:
- Education & Certification
- High School Diploma or GED (minimum); Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
- Certified Water Operator credentials.
- Class I Water Distribution Certification (or as required by state regulations).
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B with tanker endorsement preferred).
- Experience
- 4–6 years in water system operations and maintenance.
- 2–4 years in a supervisory role.
- Skills
- Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
- Proficiency in SCADA systems and GIS mapping software.
- Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and in adverse weather conditions.
